Evil Candy

This looks like an interesting NYT article about Halloween candy. It links to this blog about Samira Kawash, the Candy Professor.

  1. Wow!

"Dr. Johnson also noted that candy provides only 6 percent of the added sugar in the American diet, while sweet drinks and juice supply 46 percent."

I love stuff like this. It is reminiscient of the typical American driving through Micky D's to get a Big Mac and a DIET COKE. As if THAT does anything! Haha!

I totally agree with that article that candy isn't intrinsically bad, but its not necessarily "healthy" for you, either. It is what it is and doesn't try to claim to be something else (at least I haven't seen a Snickers bar advertised recently that says anything like "Eat me! I'll X, Y, or Z!" Granted, its supposed to make you feel full, but of course peanuts would - they're packed with protein.) In fact, the name "Snickers"? Really, people. This candy is laughing at you while you eat it. (No actually it was named after a horse named Snickers, no lie. But we can still be creative, can't we?)

True, you now hear that "oh, chocolate is good for me because it has antioxidants!" Well sure. But you better darn well be sure that that chocolate is at least 80% cacao, eaten in extreme moderation, and isn't "enhanced" with milk fat, vanilla flavoring, and what's that other thing? Oh yeah. SUGAR.

    :)
